Still & Bedford Optometrists

We believe in a different approach to optics, focused on ethics, honesty and integrity. Each member of staff does their best to make your experience in practice as informed and comfortable as possible.

We have provided excellence in optical care for 70 years, a foundation built on our patient’s trust in us.

Douglas Still opened the practice originally in 1948, in Draycott Road, moving to Highfield Road in 1951. D.C. Still was well published, producing articles devoted to clinical excellence, and sat on the British and European Standards Committee. Mr Still fully retired in 1990.

Jonathan Bedford joined the practice in 1980 and, with his wife Katharine (both optometrists, having qualified together), purchased the business in 1982. For many years Jonathan served on the Dorset Local Optical Committee, being involved with setting up some of the country’s first schemes such as Diabetic Eye Screening, Glaucoma Monitoring and Low Vision Services.

Optometrist Barry Hanna has been with the practice team for 4 years and dispensing optician Daniel Plant joined the team just over a year ago, following the retirement of Alan Estherby after 29 years.

Both NHS and private services are provided, with frames and lenses hand selected for the individual patient. Should you have any questions please call the practice, or pop in to meet the team, we will be happy to assist.
